Relay

Intensity-tiered handoff system for Claude Code

Claude CodeOpen SourceDeveloper Tool

What it is

Relay controls how much Claude implements vs what it hands back to you. Three intensity levels that adapt as your confidence grows, so you're building real coding intuition alongside your codebase, not just approving output from the sidelines.

The metaphor: a senior engineer and an intern. A good senior doesn't write all the code while the intern watches. They explain, implement some of it, then hand over tasks that are within reach. Relay is that dynamic, designed into the Claude Code session.

Intensity levels

Apprentice

Claude does almost everything. Occasional tweak cards for simple isolated values: a duration, a color, a spacing unit. Good for your first weeks in a codebase.

Builder

default

Tweak cards for all simple changes. Claude handles logic and structure. You touch the codebase regularly and build a mental map of where things live.

Engineer

Implementation briefs. Claude describes what needs to happen, you write the code, Claude reviews. Good for when you're ready to write real code.

A portfolio should not be a scaffold for work. The work starts from the portfolio.
